Stewardship: Becoming a Servant Leader

“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” – 1 Peter‬ ‭4‬:‭10‬ ‭

STEWARDSHIP. I dreamt up this panel topic and speakers months ago for an event and waited for the right time to pull it together, but I couldn’t have dreamt how impactful it would be.

It was a special evening having three valued colleagues present to share about being good stewards of our workplaces, communities, and faith. I heard so many fruitful conversations amongst our group after and walked away inspired myself.

To close the evening, I challenged everyone to write down one way they will strive to become a better steward of their workplace, community, and church/faith through a donation of either time, talent or treasure. I challenge you to do the same.

How will you become a better steward this week? This month? This year? What is one way you can grow in each of those areas? How do those three areas impact each other? For me, they’re all intertwined. When I’m a better steward in one, it tends to make an impact on the others.

Unsure of where to start?

Identify, Discern, Respond.

  1. Identify things you love, your passions, your biggest weaknesses, etc.
  2. Discern where you feel most called to serve, timing, etc.
  3. Respond in some way. Our response will not always be immediate action – sometimes it may be a “not right now” – but if you say no or “not now” to all areas multiple weeks/months in a row, I challenge you to challenge yourself. Becoming a better steward should be difficult and require sacrifices. If not, is it really charitable?

The last step is invitation. Invite others to join you to inspire broader change or simply to help hold you accountable.

One of the ways I’ve identified to challenge myself is to more boldly invite others to join me in service and live my faith more boldly in non-traditional areas. So, this my invitation: join me in creating a community full of more servant leaders. Start challenging yourself and your friends to live more boldly for Christ.
